For those new to the Apple world, the company usually unveils its new iPhone models in September each year. The iPhone 15 series, for instance, was announced on September 12, 2023, and made available in stores on September 22. Given this pattern, it’s highly likely that the iPhone 16 will follow suit. But what can we expect from this highly anticipated device?
While many wonder if Apple will finally release a foldable iPhone, Apple keeps product details tightly under wraps until the official announcement; however, reputable tech news sources can access early information. We’ve reviewed all the rumours and what we know so far to put together this round-up of what to expect from the iPhone 16.
The iPhone 16 lineup is expected to bring several notable upgrades and changes compared to the previous generation. Here are the key rumoured features and specifications:
The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are expected to feature a vertically aligned dual-camera system with a pill-shaped camera bump, departing from the traditional square bump design.
iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models could have larger displays, with the Pro increasing to 6.3 inches (from 6.1 inches) and the Pro Max to 6.9 inches (from 6.7 inches).
All models will likely feature an Action button (replacing the mute switch) and a new Capture button for recording video.
iPhone 16 Pro is expected to gain a 48MP ultra-wide camera, a significant upgrade from the current 12MP sensor.
The larger 6.3-inch iPhone 16 Pro could allow for a 5x optical zoom telephoto lens, a feature currently limited to the Pro Max model.
Some models are rumoured to feature the new A18 chip, with the Pro models potentially getting an enhanced A18 Pro variant with more cores and an upgraded neural engine for AI capabilities. Base models, however, may use the A17 chip from the iPhone 15 Pro instead of the A18.
Improved thermal management systems, such as graphene thermal systems or metal battery casings, to address overheating issues.
Faster Wi-Fi 7 connectivity for the Pro models and Wi-Fi 6E for the standard models.
Increased base storage at 256GB is expected to become the new minimum across the lineup.
Larger battery capacities, potentially using stacked battery technology for higher capacity and faster charging speeds.
Reverse wireless charging functionality is rumoured for the entire iPhone 16 lineup.
Significant AI enhancements, with generative AI, are expected to be integrated into various apps like Photos and Notes.
Running iOS 18 out of the box, with new AI-powered features and improvements.
While these rumours provide an early glimpse into the potential upgrades for the iPhone 16 series, it's important to note that official details and specifications will only be confirmed closer to the expected release in September 2024.
If you want to get your hands on the iPhone 16 when it drops, offset the cost and do your bit for the environment by selling your old iPhone to a recycler.
