Tech Trends To Look Out For In 2025

Man using phone with ai integrations

As each year progresses, it seems as though AI and GenAI is being woven into our society creating more and more innovative tech advancements. AI integrations within mobile phones and other gadgets are becoming the main focus of all improvements and we see this with software updates with every new device release. From generated text, images, videos and even technology that works to detect cancer, you can expect AI to be able to create all types of content and task completion which is only to be improved on in 2025.

More AI Within Mobile Phones

In 2024 we saw that mobile phones were being released with AI integrations including the inclusion of ChatGPT, on device image processing with features like Circle To Search, background remover and noise cancelling on your recorded videos. We expect this to go a step further in 2025 where AI will be woven into Google Assistant and Siri which will enhance their assistive capabilities as over the years Siri started to feel a bit prehistoric! It is anticipated that AI-powered digital assistants will allow for personalised continuous conversations over text and voice. Although Apple were a bit late in the game when it came to releasing their AI photo editing, Image Wand to turn a sketch into an actual image in the notes app and somewhat gimmicky Genmoji, 2025 will hopefully see more useful features coming to iPhones.

What we’re hoping to see the most in smartphones in 2025 is anti-theft protection which can be a game-changer when done with AI.Last year, Android already introduced Theft Detection, which can detect if your phone is snatched from your hand and automatically lock itself to safeguard your data. Apple however are yet to implement a similar solution - currently, iPhone users can only turn on a setting that will require FaceID unlocks in public places, with no clever theft detection in place. To put this into perspective, in 2023, there were 52,144 phone thefts across London alone. So in 2025 we should hopefully expect to see further improvements in biometric authentication and encryption technologies, making phone theft less appealing for phone poachers.

Battery Tech Advancements: Improved Safety And Longer Battery Life

Advancements in battery technology are also on the horizon, with Samsung leading the way on solid-state batteries. After three years of development, the company is expected to debut its first wearable featuring this new battery technology in 2025. Unlike the traditional lithium-ion batteries found in nearly all electronic devices today, solid state batteries use no liquid electrolytes - hence the “solid” name. This innovation promises several benefits, including reduced overheating, improved safety and longer battery life. With these enhancements, we could see our phones and wearables lasting significantly longer, addressing one of the most common frustrations of modern mobile tech!

Mobile Phones With Multiple Screens

As foldable phones continue to evolve, we can expect to see more models with multiple screens, especially as technology improves and production costs decrease. In 2024, the most affordable foldable phone was the Nubia Flip 5G, priced at £499 but by 2025, we’re likely to see even more budget-friendly options without compromising quality. The cool factor of foldables is undeniable, with their sleek, futuristic design and the convenience of a phone that can unfold into a larger screen. Whether you prefer the book-like design or flip-open form, there’s something nostalgic about the versatility of foldable displays.

Looking ahead into 2025, we think it’s safe to say that many are hoping for a foldable iPhone, though Apple has yet to take the plunge. Hopefully Apple takes note of what’s on the market because with foldable designs, there’s also the appeal of the multiple screens. Think larger, more immersive displays or additional screens for multitasking - is this a game changer or just more screen real estate that we simply do not need? As smartphones evolve, it’ll be interesting to see whether multiple screens become a standard feature or remain exclusive to foldable smartphones.

Sustainability In Phones

While many have their priorities set on AI advancements, what the industry desperately needs is more sustainable phones. In 2023, Apple incorporated  100% recycled cobalt and more than 95% recycled lithium in the iPhone 16’s battery, and Fairphone is future-proofing and making their phones more repairable. The concept of modular handsets isn’t new, there were several rumours over the years, but  to reduce the environmental impact of smartphones recycled materials in designs isn’t enough to cut down on CO2 emissions. We might be naive in thinking that 2025 could be the year the first modular phone arrives, but we’ll keep beating the drum about it.

Imagine a phone where you can easily swap out parts like the battery, camera or screen, reducing waste and extending the device’s lifespan. Could 2025 be the year a major manufacturer releases a truly modular phone? If so, could it revolutionise not just how we use smartphones, but also how we think about their environmental impact. As the industry focuses more on sustainability, modular designs may offer a solution to the growing issue of electronic waste, making it possible to hold on to our devices longer and reduce the constant cycle of upgrades.

Dumb Phones: Are Feature Heavy Smartphones Undesirable?

As smartphones become increasingly packed with features, a countertrend is emerging - the return of the “dumb” phone. In a world where many of us barely scratch the surface of our devices’ capabilities, it’s no surprise that more people are turning to minimalist alternatives with less distractions.

We often use less than 20% of features on our phones and not to mention smartphone addiction is on the rise - another reason a dumb phone may in fact be a good idea! It’s designed with fewer distractions and a more focused, intentional user experience e.g. to send texts, make calls and play the occasional snake game. These phones offer a way to disconnect from the constant bombardment of notifications and apps. Encouraging users to spend less time staring at screens and more time engaging with the world and people around them. It’s clear that there’s a shift towards simplicity and functionality, a shift that may continue to gain momentum as we approach 2025 and beyond.
